Stockton city council passes anti-crime plan

STOCKTON, CA - In an all-out assault on a spiraling crime rate, Stockton's city council passed a new plan to combat crime 7-0 Tuesday night.

"Pinpointing where it's happening and sending in the kinds of teams that can actually prevent the violence and implement good practices," Stockton Mayor Ann Johnston said.

The plan, known as the Violence Reduction Initiative, is the brainchild of Stockton Police Chief Eric Jones.

"We're going into those neighborhoods first to talk to those residents who feel held hostage, get their buy-in, get their support, find out what's going on in the community, and then bring on the enforcement effort," Jones said.

The plan includes community involvement at many levels to help gain the confidence of residents and encourage their help to find and root out crime.

Stockton man accused of skipping TB treatment is sent to jail

STOCKTON, CA - The San Joaquin County District Attorney's Office has charged a man with refusing to follow health orders after allegedly not taking medication for his tuberculosis.

Armando Rodriguez, 34, is now behind bars at the county jail until he's considered healthy enough to be near others.

Prosecutor Stephen Taylor said Rodriguez was arrestable after not being home to meet with health officials who would bring the medication and make sure the patient takes it.

Taylor said cases like this happen once or twice a year in San Joaquin County and it's usually for the same reason.

"Narcotics. The TB meds don't work with street drugs at all, " Taylor said. "They neutralize opiates, so if you're a heroin addict, you can't get high. So you make choices. It's a matter of priorities."

Stockton battles back against crime wave

STOCKTON, CA - The City of Stockton is attacking a crime wave that's left some residents afraid to leave their homes.

"Even though I live with a cop, I've never been more terrified in my life, with this rising crime wave," said Joani Anderson at a Monday night town hall meeting in Stockton.

Aggravated assaults are up 38 percent in the city, so far this year. The murder rate has tripled.

Resident Buddy Denton expressed the frustration of many at Monday night's meeting.

"We can put people in jail, but if they're not staying there, they're right back out doing the same stuff and they know that nothing's gonna happen to them," Denton said after Stockton Police Chief Eric Johnson had addressed the gathering.

Johnson's replied, "we know that we can't do it alone."
